2001 Chevrolet Blazer P0230 Fuel Pump Relay Control Circuit Fault: Loses Fuel Pressure in Drive

Model: BLAZER Fault Code: P0230 Posted: 2015-09-11 15:11

I'm experiencing a strange issue with my 2001 Chevrolet Blazer and would appreciate any help. The vehicle runs smoothly in Park or Reverse, but as soon as I shift into Drive, it loses fuel pressure. The check engine light comes on with fault code P0230 — Fuel Pump Relay Control Circuit Problem. According to the technical documentation, this DTC is triggered when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects a short to ground in the fuel pump control circuit. I've already checked power and ground connections at the relay, but I'm noticing that power from the PCM drops off when shifting into Drive — while the computer itself still has power. Any suggestions on how to diagnose or fix this issue?

Any additional details? Are you using a remote starter or any aftermarket electrical components? Is there a security light or other error codes appearing? Key switch functioning properly? No other systems (like audio or wipers) dropping out? As a starting point, try swapping the fuel pump relay to see if that resolves the issue. The P0230 code indicates a short-to-ground in the fuel pump control circuit as detected by the PCM.

Do you have a digital multimeter? I recommend measuring voltage at the fuel pump connector while driving to check for drops. Additionally, perform a ground continuity test on the ground circuit specifically in Drive — this can help identify open or short circuits in the control loop. The PCM typically applies a bias voltage to monitor the control circuit; any disruption may trigger the P0230 code.

Good morning! I replaced the fuel pump relay. After checking power and ground connections at the relay, I noticed that the signal from the PCM is lost when shifting into Drive — but the PCM itself still has power. This suggests a potential issue in the control circuit or wiring between the PCM and the relay.

I'll review the wiring diagram when I have time. Please confirm: Is there any security light on, or any related error codes? Are you using a remote starter or any aftermarket electrical devices? These could interfere with the fuel pump control circuit.
