I own a 2001 Nissan Altima GXE with a 4-cylinder, 4-speed automatic transmission. Approximately one month ago, I began noticing that the RPMs would surge when idling at stoplights or in traffic. This issue has worsened over time. Although I've been waiting for the check engine light to come on, it hasn't activated yet. After connecting a OBD2 scanner, I received a PO300 code indicating a multicylinder misfire. I'm seeking advice on potential causes and next steps. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. I've only done regular oil changes and fuel filter replacements. No tune-up yet. Should I consider a full tune-up as the next step?

The PO300 code points to a multicylinder misfire. Check for oil leaks in the distributor housing by removing the distributor cap, rotor, and the plastic cover beneath the rotor. Oil contamination on the sensor plate can cause this issue. If you find oil leakage, replacing the distributor is necessary.
