99 VW Beetle Shifting Issues with P0501 Code - No Overdrive in Limp Mode

Model: 99 vw beetle Fault Code: P0501 Posted: 2015-12-11 20:41

Hi everyone, I'm looking for help with my 1999 VW Beetle. I bought it a year ago and it has always had the speedometer not working and a persistent check engine light. About a week ago, while driving to work, I noticed the gear indicator went blank — the car entered limp mode and will not shift into overdrive (OD). It now shows fault code P0501. I've tried disconnecting the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), and when I do, the check engine light turns off and the gear indicator resumes showing gears. However, even after this, the car still does not engage overdrive. The issue seems to be related to the VSS or its circuit. Any advice on diagnosing or fixing this? This is my work vehicle, so any solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mason.

Check the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and its electrical circuit for faults — a faulty sensor or wiring issue can trigger P0501 and cause limp mode and overdrive failure in a 1999 VW Beetle.
