1999 Chevy Venture P0717 Code: Transmission Speed Sensor Wiring Location and Diagnostics

Model: 99 venture Fault Code: P0717 Posted: 2009-05-20 19:53

I own a 1999 Chevrolet Venture with 207,000 miles. The transmission was rebuilt at 144,000 miles. I'm currently receiving OBD2 diagnostic code P0717, which indicates that the transmission speed sensor is not sending a signal. This sensor is located inside the transmission and typically requires around $600 to replace. However, before assuming it's a faulty sensor, I'd like to know where the wiring harness exits the transmission. Since there's no signal, it's possible that the wiring itself is damaged rather than the sensor. The vehicle runs smoothly and shifts through all four gears without issues. Any insights into this would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't encountered this issue before, but I believe the wiring harness exits the transmission from the top side. I'll need to inspect my own vehicle to confirm this.

Near where the engine meets the transmission, on the radiator side, there's typically an oval-shaped connector that links to the transmission. This is the only plug housing internal transmission wiring. Look for blue/white and red/black wires—these are the speed sensor wires. Without a lab scope, it's difficult to verify the signal directly, but you can use a multimeter to test continuity with the connector unplugged. This will help determine if the circuit is open or shorted.

Thanks for the helpful tips—I'll check that location on my vehicle today and verify the wiring connections.
