1999 GMC Suburban P0102 Code: MAF Sensor Low Input Issue and K&N Filter Impact

Model: 99 Suburban Fault Code: P0102 Posted: 2008-08-04 22:51

I own a 1999 GMC Suburban that is throwing a P0102 diagnostic trouble code. The code indicates a 'Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Low Input,' which typically points to a faulty MAF sensor or an issue with airflow into the engine. I currently have a K&N air filter installed. Could this be causing the low input reading? Is there a direct link between the K&N filter and the P0102 code? What is the correct way to diagnose and fix this problem?

It's more than likely that your K&N air filter is allowing excessive airflow into the engine, which the MAF sensor detects as a low input signal. This can trigger the P0102 code. The most effective fix is to replace the current K&N filter with an OEM or standard paper filter and then clear the diagnostic code using an OBD-II scanner.

The MAF sensor may be contaminated by oil residue from the K&N filter, especially if it's not properly maintained. Try cleaning the MAF sensor with a dedicated brake cleaner or electronic sensor cleaner. After cleaning, reinstall a standard paper air filter and clear the P0102 code to verify if the issue resolves.
