1999 Mercury Villager P0340 Code: No Camshaft Position Sensor? It's Actually in the Distributor!

Model: 99 Mercury Villager Fault Code: P0340 Posted: 2008-09-10 08:37

I'm really frustrated! I've been getting a P0340 diagnostic code indicating a camshaft position sensor issue, but when I ask dealerships or parts stores for this component, they say it doesn't exist on my 1999 Mercury Villager. Is there something I'm missing? What could be causing this error if there's no actual camshaft position sensor?

The car doesn't have a traditional camshaft position sensor like most vehicles. Instead, the timing information is managed by the distributor. A P0340 code on this model typically means the engine's timing is off or there's a misfire. Check forums for similar issues with 1999 Mercury Villagers—many owners have faced this. If not resolved, take it to a qualified mechanic who understands these older models.

On the 1999 Mercury Villager, there is no dedicated camshaft position sensor like in modern engines. The distributor handles timing signals. In over 90% of cases, a faulty distributor is the root cause of this code. This is one of the most common issues on this model.
