1999 Grand Cherokee Limited P1700 Fault Codes: Transmission Won't Engage Without Revving

Model: 99 Grand Cherokee Ltd. Fault Code: P1700 Posted: 2011-01-16 14:16

I recently purchased a 1999 Grand Cherokee Limited with 4.7L V8, 4x4 drivetrain, and 110,000 miles. The vehicle has been experiencing battery-related issues—recently the battery died completely. After recharging, I noticed that the transmission will not engage into any gear without being revved to a high RPM, after which it slips significantly. I used a CodeScout 70-0 code reader and retrieved several fault codes: P1728, P1732, P1784, and P1700. These codes appear in that order. I've searched manufacturer-specific documentation but cannot find clear explanations for these specific codes. The transmission is a 45RFE, and I have no record of a TCM (Transmission Control Module) software flash. The vehicle was acquired just one week ago, so it's possible the issue stems from an older or undiagnosed fault. I'm seeking help to identify the root cause without having to visit a high-cost transmission repair shop—especially given my location and limited budget. Any insights into what these codes mean or how to troubleshoot them would be greatly appreciated.
