1999 Ford Ranger P0171, P0174 and P0442 Codes: Intake Vacuum Leak or Evaporative System Issue?

Model: 99 ford ranger Fault Code: P0171 Posted: 2021-10-09 02:14

Can a P0442 code cause P0171 and P0174? I'm assuming that with both lean bank codes present, it indicates an intake system issue. However, I want to confirm whether the P0442 (evaporative emissions system leak) is directly responsible for the lean conditions indicated by P0171 and P0174. These codes typically point to either vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure, clogged or dirty fuel injectors, or a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor. Since both banks show lean conditions, it's likely a shared intake system problem rather than an evaporation-related issue alone. I'm wondering if the codes triggered simultaneously—could this suggest a more systemic fault? A scan tool to check STFT and LTFT values would help identify whether the engine is running lean across all cylinders. Additionally, cleaning the mass airflow sensor with brake cleaner and blowing it dry (on a cold element) may resolve the issue. Fuel pressure should be checked via fuel gauge; low pressure could contribute to lean readings. Injector performance can only be assessed through an injector drop test—this requires specialized equipment. A small evaporative leak might exist anywhere in the system, but such leaks are best diagnosed using a smoke machine.

No evap problem would not cause lean codes. Did they trigger together? Lean codes both banks could be vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure, dirty restricted injectors, dirty mass airflow sensor. Do you have a scan tool to look at stft and ltft? Could look at mass airflow element to see if dirty clean with brake parts cleaner blow dry do with element cold. Low fuel pressure need fuel gage. Injectors would have to do injector drop test special equipment needed. Small evap leak could be anywhere best tested with a smoke machine.
