99 Dodge Dakota P0505 and P0171 - Fuel Consumption Increase with Black Smoke
My 1999 Dodge Dakota has suddenly started consuming fuel at an unusually high rate and is now emitting black smoke from the exhaust. The vehicle exhibits poor fuel efficiency and a noticeable increase in emissions. I've checked the diagnostic trouble codes, which show P0505 (Idle Control System Malfunction) and P0171 (System Too Lean). Any insights or potential causes for this issue?
The most likely causes are a faulty upstream oxygen sensor(s) or a leak in the intake plenum pan gasket, both of which can lead to incorrect air-fuel mixture readings and excessive fuel consumption, resulting in black smoke and lean code P0171.
