1998 Chevrolet Tahoe P0300 Code: Fuel Pressure Issue When Towing Heavy Loads
Hi everyone, I have a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe that consistently throws the P0300 code when towing heavy loads. This issue started around 100,000 miles and has persisted through now at 140,000 miles — I'm starting to feel frustrated. The problem only occurs during acceleration, such as when merging onto the freeway or passing another vehicle. When I accelerate, the engine begins to shake, the service engine light comes on, and if I ease off the throttle for a second or two, it may temporarily stabilize. If I continue accelerating, the engine loses power until I release the accelerator for a few seconds — then it resumes. The vehicle runs fine when driving in town with a trailer, but the issue becomes severe under heavy load conditions. I've already replaced the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and intake manifold gasket. I also replaced the distributor gear, though I'm not entirely sure if that was necessary. None of these fixes resolved the problem. I performed a fuel pressure test: when the engine is running, the pressure reads around 55 psi. When I turn off the engine, the pressure rises to about 62 psi and then drops back to 55 psi — it holds steady at that level. According to factory specifications, the correct fuel pressure should be between 60–65 psi for this model. A low reading like this could explain the misfire and poor performance under load. I’ve confirmed there’s an inline fuel filter in place, which has already been replaced. Given that this is a high-mileage vehicle used frequently for towing, I’m wondering if there's a mechanical or electrical issue related to fuel delivery. The P030-0 code suggests a random misfire, and with the fuel pressure being below specification, it seems like a likely root cause. I'm hoping someone can confirm whether this is a known issue on 1998 Tahoe models, especially when operating in towing mode or under high load. Any advice on next steps — such as replacing the fuel pump (preferably OEM) or checking for exhaust backpressure — would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Are there any other diagnostic codes present? The P0300 is a random misfire code, but it's worth checking if there are related P1XXX codes. Is the vehicle stock (no modifications)? Fuel pressure at 55 psi seems low — I’ll verify factory specs for this model year. Does the 1998 Tahoe have a Tow Haul mode switch on the shifter? Also, exhaust backpressure should be checked as it can contribute to misfires under load. As a last resort, check if there's a fuel filter or fuel pump issue — though I suspect the fuel pump is likely next in line. Be sure to use an OEM fuel pump if replacing one.
