98 S10 4.3L Engine P0101 and P0406 Codes: Causes and Fixes for Poor Throttle Response

Model: 98 S10 Fault Code: P0101 Posted: 2015-12-01 23:51

I'm experiencing both P0101 (Mass Airflow Sensor Circuit Range/Performance) and P0404 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold) codes on my 1998 S10 with a 4.3L V6 engine. Throttle response is extremely poor—engine surges as RPM increases. The issue appeared suddenly, going from normal operation to severe performance problems. I've already replaced the MAF sensor without improvement. Could a clogged catalytic converter be causing both codes? Is there a possibility of EGR system carbon buildup contributing to P0404 on this engine model?

Perform an exhaust backpressure test using an inexpensive gauge or rental device. A vacuum gauge can also help detect catalytic converter restriction. Consider the EGR system—carbon buildup is a common cause of P0404 on 4.3L engines.

I'm replacing the catalytic converter tomorrow as it appears plugged. I hope this resolves both issues. Is there a way to clean the EGR passages on a 4.3L engine? A wire brush and vacuum cleaner might work, though it's a bit of a hassle.
