1998 Nissan Frontier P0446 & P0440 Code Troubleshooting: Alternator, Dashboard Lights, and Throttle Position Sensor Issues

Model: 98 Nissan Frontier Fault Code: P0440 Posted: 2010-09-05 20:44

Hello from Alabama! I recently purchased a 1998 Nissan Frontier Extended Cab and am experiencing several electrical and engine-related issues. After the speedometer stopped working, I took it to a repair shop. A key lesson learned: removing the instrument cluster will cause the alternator to fail — I discovered this after spending hours installing a battery and alternator only to find that the truck wouldn’t power the electrical system at all. The repair shop confirmed the truck runs but lacks proper charging, which explains why dashboard lights (including check engine light) are non-functional. The rear tail lights also don’t work, though I’ve checked all fuses. A scan at AutoZone revealed two diagnostic trouble codes: P0446 and P0440. The truck exhibits rough idling, especially at low speeds, and occasionally shuts off unexpectedly. One technician suggested a faulty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) as the root cause. I’d like to know exactly where this sensor is located on the 1998 Nissan Frontier and whether replacing it would resolve both the stalling and idle issues. Additionally, there’s a blue wire with a red stripe in the instrument cluster harness that appears unconnected — does this play a role in the dashboard lighting or electrical system failure? Any detailed guidance on diagnosing P0446/P0440 codes and locating the TPS would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help, Chris!

For a 1998 Nissan Frontier with P0446 and P0440 issues, refer to the Haynes manual for step-by-step guidance on diagnosing evaporative emission system faults and locating the Throttle Position Sensor. The TPS is typically found near the throttle body, and faulty readings can cause stalling and rough idling. Also check for wiring harness connections, especially the blue wire with red stripe — it may be a grounding or signal wire affecting dashboard lighting.
