1998 Ford F150 V8 4.6L - P0121 and P0174 Fault Codes: Diagnosis and Fix

Model: 98 Ford F150 Fault Code: P0121 Posted: 2006-10-31 18:25

I'm experiencing two OBD-II fault codes on my 1998 Ford F150 with a 4.6L V8 engine: P0121 (Throttle Position Sensor Range/Performance) and P0174 (System Too Lean - Bank 2). I've already installed a K&N air filter, but I'm now considering cleaning the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor as recommended by this forum. I'm hoping to resolve these issues without needing expensive repairs or replacements. I'd like to know if there's any specific guidance on whether the K&N filter is contributing to the fault codes, and what steps I should take next to diagnose and fix both P0121 and P0174.

P0121 indicates a problem with the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), while P0174 points to a lean air-fuel mixture in Bank 2. These codes may be caused by oil contamination from the K&N air filter, especially if oil has migrated into the intake system. I recommend removing the K&N filter temporarily to prevent further damage to the MAF sensor and TPS, then reset the check engine light. Monitor for code return after driving under normal conditions.

I've used a K&N air filter for over 100,000 miles with no issues until now. I recently cleaned my Mass Air Flow sensor, but the fault codes returned within a few weeks. This suggests that while cleaning the MAF helps, it may not be the root cause. I'm currently monitoring the situation and will update this thread if I find a permanent fix. Please continue sharing insights—am I on the right track? Thanks, Doug

Cleaning the MAF sensor is a common step, but in many cases, a K&N filter can introduce oil into the intake system, especially if not properly maintained. Consider removing the K&N filter entirely and replacing it with a standard air filter to avoid interference with engine sensors.

So far, so good! After cleaning the MAF sensor, no fault codes have returned. My truck is running smoothly—no pinging or hesitation. I've been driving it for several miles under various conditions and the engine feels stronger than before.

Wishing you many more trouble-free miles ahead. Keeping your truck running reliably is a great achievement, especially after resolving these persistent codes.

I've driven over 500 miles now and the truck runs exceptionally well. Before this fix, I experienced pinging under load around 3,000 RPM—especially noticeable when climbing hills or accelerating hard. That issue has completely disappeared.
