1998 Ford F150 V8 4.6L - P0121 and P0174 Fault Codes: Diagnosis and Fix
I'm experiencing two OBD-II fault codes on my 1998 Ford F150 with a 4.6L V8 engine: P0121 (Throttle Position Sensor Range/Performance) and P0174 (System Too Lean - Bank 2). I've already installed a K&N air filter, but I'm now considering cleaning the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor as recommended by this forum. I'm hoping to resolve these issues without needing expensive repairs or replacements. I'd like to know if there's any specific guidance on whether the K&N filter is contributing to the fault codes, and what steps I should take next to diagnose and fix both P0121 and P0174.
P0121 indicates a problem with the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), while P0174 points to a lean air-fuel mixture in Bank 2. These codes may be caused by oil contamination from the K&N air filter, especially if oil has migrated into the intake system. I recommend removing the K&N filter temporarily to prevent further damage to the MAF sensor and TPS, then reset the check engine light. Monitor for code return after driving under normal conditions.
