P1744 Diagnostic Code on 1998 Ford Escort with Automatic Transmission: Solenoid or Torque Converter Issue?
My daughter drives a 1998 Ford Escort with a 2.0L engine and automatic transmission. She recently received trouble code P1744, indicating a 'torque converter clutch solenoid malfunction.' I want to understand whether this error is primarily caused by a faulty solenoid or if it could also point to an issue with the torque converter itself. The transmission fluid and filter have been replaced every 30,000 miles, and the vehicle has now reached 107,000 total miles. Could you please clarify where the torque converter clutch solenoid is located within the transmission? Thanks, MBF.
Most of the time, the solenoid itself fails, and occasionally small particles of dirt enter the valve body, interfering with its operation. The solenoid is located in the transmission valve body, underneath the transmission pan. Have you ever had a full transmission flush performed? Simply changing fluid and filter isn't always sufficient—regular flushing may help prevent internal wear and improve performance.
