P1383 Fault Code on 1998 Ford Contour with 2.0 DOHC ZTEC Engine
I recently purchased a 1998 Ford Contour equipped with a 2.0L DOHC ZTEC engine featuring VCT (Variable Cam Timing). After replacing the timing belt and tensioner due to a broken tensioner, I now experience erratic idle and am consistently receiving the P1383 diagnostic trouble code: 'Cam Bank 1 Over Retarded'. Although I have confirmed that the camshafts are properly aligned, the vehicle is currently non-functional. The issue appears to be related to the Cam Position Sensor or its associated wiring and signal integrity. Given that this is a VCT system, any misalignment or sensor failure could cause the engine control module (ECM) to interpret cam position incorrectly, leading to the P1383 code. I'm seeking advice on how to diagnose and resolve this issue without further damaging the engine. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.
