1998 Chrysler Cirrus 2.5L V6 - P0700 and P0733/P0734 Codes: Gear Shift Issue & High RPM After Third Gear

Model: 98 Chrysler Cirrus Fault Code: P0700 Posted: 2014-11-16 14:35

While driving from a stoplight, I noticed the RPM suddenly jumped to over 3000 when transitioning into third gear. By the time I arrived home, the Check Engine light had activated. A diagnostic scan revealed codes P0733, P0734, P0700, and P700P. My vehicle is a 1998 Chrysler Cirrus with a 2.5L V6 engine. What could be causing this behavior? How can I diagnose and fix the issue?

Check the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) circuit and its sensor for faults, as it plays a key role in gear shifting and transmission control.

The 1998 Chrysler Cirrus with an automatic transmission does not have a traditional VSS; instead, the transmission relies on other sensors to determine speed. This means the issue may stem from another component.

Verify the Output Shaft Speed Sensor and its wiring harness. The sensor is typically connected to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with a green/violet wire and grounded via a dark blue/brown wire. A faulty output shaft speed sensor can cause erratic shifting, high RPMs in third gear, and P0700-related codes.
