1998 Chevy Cavalier Z24 P0172: Bank 1 System Too Rich - Diagnosis & Fixes
Hi everyone, I recently had my 1998 Chevy Cavalier Z24 tuned up about a month ago. Since then, the check engine light came on while driving yesterday, and the diagnostic scan shows P0172 — Bank 1 system too rich. I've also noticed a significant drop in my average fuel efficiency (MPG). What are the most likely causes of this issue? Which components should I inspect or replace to troubleshoot it effectively? Thanks for any insights!
A tune-up is a broad term — could you clarify what exactly was replaced or adjusted during the service? For example, were spark plugs, plug wires, or fuel injectors changed? What brands were used? Also, are there any other diagnostic trouble codes present? Does the engine run smoothly without misfires? Is the temperature gauge functioning properly? One key component to check is the fuel pressure regulator — inspect the vacuum line connected to it. There should be no visible fuel residue in that line; if present, it could indicate a leak or failure.
