1998 Chevrolet Diesel P0251 and P0231 Fault: Injector Pump Fuel Metering Issue & Engine Stalling at Warm-up

Model: 98 chevrolet diesel Fault Code: P0251 Posted: 2009-03-14 16:08

I own a 1998 Chevrolet diesel and am experiencing engine stalling, particularly as the engine begins to warm up. The vehicle will start again after stalling but I've noticed a persistent fault code P0251 related to injector pump fuel metering. Additionally, I have code P0231. The issue seems worse during initial warming cycles and improves when maintaining RPMs above 2500. What specific repairs should I consider? Is the Injector Driver Module (IDM) a likely culprit?

The Injector Driver Module (IDM) is known to fail over time due to heat exposure, which can cause symptoms like engine stalling and fault codes P025-1 and P0231. Many owners have found that relocating the IDM to the firewall helps reduce heat exposure and improves reliability.

I replaced my IDM and installed a relocation kit. While it was a bit expensive, the improvement in engine stability has been significant—stalling issues have greatly reduced or disappeared.

The IDM is indeed a common cause of these symptoms. Since you've already installed a relocation kit, that should extend the lifespan of your module and help prevent future failures. It's worth considering for long-term reliability—especially as summer approaches and engine temperatures rise.
