1998 Buick Century 3.1L P0306 Fault: Causes, Diagnosis & Solutions

Model: 98 Buick Century Fault Code: P0306 Posted: 2009-06-11 22:51

Hello, I have a 1998 Buick Century with a 3.1L engine. The vehicle has been stored for three years without use and ran perfectly when parked. Recently, I've tried to restart it but now it's running poorly and displaying fault code P0306 on my OBD2 scanner. It idles smoothly, but during acceleration in neutral, the engine stumbles noticeably. When driving under load, the car shakes significantly. I've already replaced the spark plugs, plug wires, and fuel filter with no improvement. I'm now looking for reliable guidance on how to test fuel pressure and check ignition coils using an ohmmeter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated—this is a vintage vehicle, and I can't afford to replace multiple components without knowing what's actually causing the issue.

After three years of storage, fuel degradation in the lines is likely. Fuel gum buildup can severely clog injectors—this is a common issue on long-term stored vehicles. I recommend using a bottle of Techron (available at Auto Zone for about $12). The instructions suggest running it with a full tank; however, for best results, try 1/2 tank to avoid overfilling and potential fuel system stress. When vehicles are stored for extended periods, the entire fuel system—including the fuel tank—must be purged of stale fuel. This helps restore proper flow and performance. I believe this is not primarily an electrical issue. The 3.1L engine uses a vacuum system with multiple lines (typically three or more). Check these hoses for cracks or deterioration, as leaks can cause misfires and P0306 symptoms. Additionally, ensure the EGR valve isn or partially stuck—though I don't believe it's the main culprit here. Good luck with your restoration!
