1998 Accord 2.3L Misfire Diagnosis: How to Test Injector with P0302 Fault Code

Model: 98 Accord 2.3 Fault Code: P0302 Posted: 2016-07-28 08:30

When diagnosing a misfire on an injector in a 1998 Honda Accord 2.3L engine, should you disconnect the electrical connector of the suspected cylinder while the engine is running? This method can help isolate whether the issue lies with the injector itself. Thanks for the insight, Roach

Yes, disconnecting the electrical connector is one valid approach. However, it's important to use a noid light to confirm that fuel injection pulses are still present. Additionally, check for a drop in fuel pressure with the key off (KOEO) to determine if the injector is stuck open. Note that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) may register an injector circuit fault during testing—this does not necessarily indicate a permanent failure; simply monitor the results carefully.

I experience intermittent misfires on my 1998 Accord 2.3L after starting the engine. The issue appears only when I rev the motor slightly, and then disappears after about 15–30 seconds. A P0302 code (indicating a misfire in cylinder #2) is set occasionally but not consistently. I haven't replaced the spark plug yet—resistance tests show normal values for plug wires. Distributor cap and rotor also appear to be in good condition. The injector has already been replaced. Any other potential causes or diagnostic steps? Thanks, Kevin
