PO420 Fault on 1998 Honda Accord 2.2L EX: Aftermarket Cat Replacement Dilemma
Installed a new Walker aftermarket catalytic converter in February, direct fit model. Recently the vehicle triggered a PO420 code (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold). A local shop performed diagnostics and confirmed the issue — they recommended replacing the cat, noting that oxygen sensors are functioning properly. I contacted Honda directly for an OEM catalytic converter, which costs $815. The Walker unit is still under warranty with 25,000-mile coverage. My dilemma: should I replace it with another Walker (assuming the original was defective — unlikely), pay $81 or go with a genuine OEM part? Are there any reliable aftermarket brands that work well and are more affordable? The car has 135,000 miles but is very clean and mechanically sound. Any insights from owners of similar models would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kevin
For imported vehicles like this, OEM catalytic converters are the most reliable option. Aftermarket units such as Walker may not perform well under real-world conditions — even if they're covered by warranty. Since your current unit is still under warranty, it's logical to request a replacement at no cost. At least installation is straightforward. I recently installed an OEM cat on a Honda CR-V and paid $1,255 — so while expensive, it’s the most dependable choice.
