1997 Ford T-Bird V8 P0430 and P0141: Oxygen Sensor or Catalytic Converter Issue?

Model: 97 T-Bird V8 Fault Code: P0141 Posted: 2007-07-11 15:31

I recently encountered two OBD2 trouble codes on my 1997 Ford T-Bird V8: P0430 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold - Bank 2) and later P0141 (HO2S Heater Circuit Fault - Bank 1 Sensor 2). I initially replaced the passenger-side rear oxygen sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 2), which is typically associated with the P0430 code. However, just 7 miles down the road, the check engine light returned and a new code appeared: P0141. From my understanding, P0141 refers to the heater circuit of the oxygen sensor on Bank 1, Sensor 2 — which is located on the opposite side of the engine from cylinder #1. So, I'm wondering if this could be related to a misdiagnosis or incorrect installation. My question: Is it normal for replacing a rear O2 sensor to resolve P0430? Or does a P043 as code point more directly to a failing catalytic converter rather than an oxygen sensor? Any insights from owners of 1997 T-Bird V8s with similar issues would be greatly appreciated!

First, it's important to clarify that replacing a rear O2 sensor — especially on the wrong bank — is not an effective fix for P0430. A true P0430 code typically indicates a rapid-switching oxygen sensor (usually on Bank 2), which suggests a failing catalytic converter rather than a faulty sensor. When you replaced the rear O2 sensor, did you confirm it was installed on the correct bank? The rear O2 sensor should be on the side opposite cylinder #1 (Bank 2). If you mistakenly installed it on Bank 1, that could trigger both P0430 and P0141 due to a misaligned or improperly wired installation. To verify: double-check your installation. If the wrong bank was used, this may have caused the code to appear. Otherwise, the issue might point toward a failing catalytic converter — especially if the sensor is still showing rapid switching behavior.

Thanks for the clarification! I followed the instructions on http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/p0430-bank-2.php, which indicated that Bank 2 is the passenger side. I'll verify tomorrow whether I installed it correctly opposite cylinder #1. In the meantime, if this isn't a wiring or installation error, does that mean P0430 points directly to a failing catalytic converter? Is there any way to test that without pulling the exhaust system apart?
