1997 Jeep Wrangler 107,000 Miles with P0171 and P0131 OBD2 Codes - Diagnosis and Fix

Model: 97 Jeep Wrangler Fault Code: P0131 Posted: 2007-09-14 10:11

I recently purchased a 1997 Jeep Wrangler with 107,000 miles. After getting it back from the dealership—where they replaced the steering box and sensor—I started seeing two diagnostic trouble codes: P0171 (System Too Lean Bank 1) and P0131 (O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1). I took it to a trusted repair shop, and they noted that the pipe between the catalytic converter and muffler, near the U-bolt, is severely loose. They plan to weld it in place. However, I'm confused about the P0171 code because my Jeep does not have a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor—so how can this lean condition be triggered? Additionally, I'm unsure what exactly the P0131 code means and whether it's directly related to the exhaust pipe issue or another underlying problem. Any insight into these codes in a 1997 Jeep Wrangler would be greatly appreciated.

The P0171 code could indeed be caused by an oxygen sensor that's stuck in a lean state. If the O2 sensor is not properly sensing exhaust composition, it may incorrectly report a lean condition to the ECU. Conversely, a persistent lean condition—such as from vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure, or intake manifold issues—can also trigger both P0171 and P0131. A thorough diagnostic scan with live data readings is essential to pinpoint the root cause.

As mentioned, always verify that no vacuum hoses are disconnected or improperly routed—this is a common issue in older Jeep Wranglers and can directly lead to lean mixtures and trigger both P0171 and P0-131 codes.

Hi there. You're likely experiencing an intake leak. Please inspect all intake hoses, especially around the throttle body and air intake system for cracks or disconnections. Even small leaks can cause a lean condition and trigger P0171.
