1997 Ford Explorer 4.0L XLT with P1506 Idle Air Control Over Speed Error - Diagnosis and Fixes

Model: 97 Explorer 4.0 XLT Fault Code: P1506 Posted: 2007-10-01 14:48

I'm seeking detailed information about the P150-6 'Idle Air Control Over Speed' error code in my 1997 Ford Explorer 4.0L V6 automatic XLT. The vehicle has 121,000 miles and runs well overall, but this specific fault code consistently appears. After clearing the code, I drive for approximately 15–20 minutes, after which the Over-Drive light begins flashing intermittently, followed by the check engine light activating. This behavior occurs every time I test the vehicle under similar conditions. I'm looking for accurate technical insights into what could be causing this issue—especially whether it's related to idle control components or sensor malfunctions. Any advice on diagnostics or potential fixes would be greatly appreciated.

The P1506 error may often stem from a clogged throttle body or Idle Air Control (IAC) passage. Cleaning these components is typically a simple and effective first step. Additionally, verify that the idle speed remains within manufacturer specifications after cleaning.

I recently started cleaning the throttle body and IAC passages myself. Initially, the engine idles around 2000 RPM for about 10–20 seconds before settling to approximately 1500 RPM. After driving a short distance, it appears to idle normally at stops and red lights. However, the P1506 error code tends to reappear after extended driving—possibly due to the engine control module taking time to stabilize or recalibrate.

After cleaning the IAC valve, does the P1506 code remain active? Did you also clean the throttle body and ensure proper reassembly of the idle air control system?
