1997 Ford Escort 2.0L SOHC Crank No Start with OBD Code P0302
Hi everyone, new member here. I'm dealing with a 1997 Ford Escort 2.0L single overhead cam (SOHC) engine that won't start — it's a 'crank no start' condition. The engine shows spark from the coil, fuel is flowing from the pump, and when I try to start it, it makes a rough, bogging sound as if something is holding back the engine. I've inspected the top timing belt cover and confirmed that the timing belt is intact and turning properly. No signs of breakage. The OBD code displayed is P0302. I'm looking for any insights or troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue — any help would be greatly appreciated.
The vehicle fails to start completely — either after being parked or after a cut-off. Possible causes include camshaft misalignment, which could result from a loose or worn timing belt. Check for lack of compression. Also, inspect if spark plugs are flooded with fuel; strong fuel odor from the exhaust after prolonged cranking may indicate this. Ensure the throttle body is clean and functioning properly — dirtiness can prevent proper airflow. A faulty engine temperature sensor might also cause excessive fuel delivery. More details would be helpful — any specific symptoms or diagnostics you've already performed?
