1997 Chevrolet Cavalier OBD2 Fault Codes: P0200 & P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire and Fuel Leak Symptoms

Model: 97 chevrolet cavalier Fault Code: P2177 Posted: 2008-09-25 21:12

My 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier with 130,000 miles has two OBD2 fault codes: P0200 (Injector Circuit Fault) and P0304 (Cylinder 4 Misfire). The vehicle runs very roughly due to the misfire, and I'm noticing a strong fuel odor—likely from excessive fuel being burned or leaking. The check engine light stays on during normal driving but blinks for about 30 seconds when idling, then stops when the throttle is applied. If the car is idle in neutral, the blinking does not occur. I suspect one of the injectors is stuck open, causing unburned fuel to be dumped into the exhaust system (explaining the strong smell). The previous owner reportedly ran the vehicle on near-empty for extended periods, which may have contributed to injector wear or failure. The fault codes point to an electrical issue with the injector circuit. Before I spend time cutting open wiring harnesses and testing circuits, I'd like to know if this has happened to others before. Any experience with P0200 and P0300/P0304 on a 1997 Cavalier? I'm looking for confirmation that replacing the #4 injector (or all four) is a viable solution. If needed, I have a video phone available—feel free to request footage. Thanks in advance for any insights or troubleshooting tips.

The injectors on this model are prone to failure and can leak fuel externally. Given the P0200 code and a misfire in cylinder 4, it's highly likely that the #4 injector is faulty. A recommended solution is to replace all four injectors as a preventive measure, especially considering the vehicle’s age and history of being driven on near-empty.
