start by checking the forums for the same codes on the same type of car for starters! All the info you seek is within there should you choose to actually look for it.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did that. There was nothing thus the new thread. If you have something usefull to add please do so, otherwise buzz off. dan

nothing about a cyl#4 misfire, VW's also throw those codes with problems with the throttle body! Thanks for the directions but I think I'll stick around. I have a felling you'll be needing me!

I'd address the misfire code first because it could be causing the other 2! Has a tuneup been done ever? ALot of times an engine can miss and be very difficult to feel! Especially if it's a lean injector or valve that's not sealling well at idle!

PLease Take it easy on our techs Dan.... We're here to help. There is in fact alot of info on this site regarding some of those codes.

no he's right! I found a post about a 99 Bug with an 1128 code but no 1127 code! No way they'd be similar right! and wait there's a 2000 Jetta with a 1127 but again I doubt that would be of any help to him, probably nothing similar! same as the 2000 jetta that's there as well! all no relevance to his, his car is probably a whole other case of symptons and problems!

Yeah, I hear ya comp! What's a guy to do?

I meant that reply with Love, the smiley landed in the wrong place.. As to a tune up, um well. I don't know. I bought it last Friday. Anyway, I pulled the plugs and checked it all out the plugs looked sweet like they had just been installed, the wires the same. The cap and rotor showed a bit more wear than I would have liked and I'll be replacing them this weekend. Discover more Spark plug Engine Fuel I was thinking of removing the T body and cleaning it up although it looks really clean looking passed the throttle blade and I've read something about needing to "relearn" if removed and that makes me a bit nervous.. So any suggestion here would be awesome! So again the buzz off comment wasn't meant as a "screw you", I'm sure I'll be needing your help in the future also, I did NOT mention in my first post that I did a search so my bad on two counts. Update, I cleared the codes and it has been fine until today and the P 1582 came back, I'll be picking up a cap and rotor asap... I ordered a Bently for my 96 and my 90 TD as well a couple days ago I'm betting that will help a little on my end... Thanks for the suggestions and keepem coming. dan

you bought it from a dealer or private sale? if it's from a car dealer get it back to them! why pay for repairs out of your pocket!

Anonymous 2007-09-20 08:51

Private seller. I haven bought from a dealer in over 8 years. I'm suspecting the throttle body needs to be cleaned with 120k on the clock. Maybe this weekend as I'm laid up for the next three days.. dan

cleaning the throttle will not fix the misfire code. If it were me I'd try a used MAF! A MAF could cause the fuel trims and Misfire dtc though!

Anonymous 2007-09-21 17:42

No I didn't think cleaning the throttle body would take care of the misfire code I was thinking it would keep the 1582 away. I'm going to install a new cap, rotor and plugs for the misfire. I didn't even think of a salvage yard MAF, when I bough the car the previous owner told me the SEL was for a MAF code.. I scanned it and got the codes listed. No MAF code though. I had even bought one before I even brought the car home. $150 for a rebuilt one. Typical VW another code piped up today, P 1152 which I believe is a ECTS (engine coolant temp sensor). Think if I'm going to keep this car I had better invest in a good ODBII scanner... Got any suggestions as to a decent one to buy? Any news on the V-Checker? dan

I think what the previous owner meant by a MAF code was that somebody had suggestted to him that that vwould be the req'd repair and he chose to sell it. I think the MAF maybe causing the 1582 although the ECT code could be a CLUE

Anonymous 2007-09-24 11:15

How would the MAF cause a 1582 code? 1582= Idle adaption at limit. The Bentley says this is a TB issue. I've put prob another 300+ miles and the 1152 code isnt back (nor pending). dan

Anonymous 2007-09-24 12:58

I stand correctted then! You and the Bentley seem to have us beat then!

jeff compton wrote: I stand corrected then! You and the Bentley seem to have us beat then! NO no! If you know something please tell, books have been known to be wrong (or interpreted incorrectly). Wouldn't that 1582 code be linked to the TB? The way it reads (dont have here) it says the throttle body cannot adjust the idle anymore due to _______.. dan

Anonymous 2007-09-24 14:11

You're approaching this like you have more then 1 issue causing the codes and maybe you do but Idle adaptation can mean that the pcm can not adjust the fuel trim or iac enough to correct! So maybe the throttle body is cause for the 1582 but maybe the MAf is as well. I mean if cleanning it keeps it away then awesome it's a fix for that code, but the 1128 or 1127 I still feel will likely end up being a MAF problem. As for the misfire and the ETC code well maybe they're going to develop or go away ! It's just if the IAC looked clean then why would cleanning it fix anything! I guess Im optimistic but if we're me the MAF is probably cheaper then a throttle bocy so I'd probably try another one of those before doing anything else on the car. I'd be discouraged if I'd just bought it and was faced with that many codes and that many different causes and new ones coming up every time I repairred something else

A stretched timing belt or a failing belt tensioner might cause this set of codes. Not familiar with this engine but many VWs and Audi models use a timing belt setup. If it has never been replaced, it should be done now before it destroys the engine. Idlers, tensioners, etc. should also be replaced. I just did my Audi and because I had to tear the front end off the car to do the timing belt, I also replaced the water pump, thermostat, and serpentine belt along with the timing belt idler and the tensioner.
