1996 Chevrolet S10 4.3L V6 P0719 Brake Switch Fault - Diagnosis & Fix Guide

Model: 96 s10 4.3L V6 Fault Code: P0719 Posted: 2008-08-31 14:50

I recently encountered a P0719 diagnostic trouble code on my 1996 Chevrolet S10 with the 4.3L V6 engine, which indicates a fault in the brake switch circuit. While I understand the general meaning of this code, I'm still unsure about the exact steps to diagnose and repair it. I’m not a professional mechanic, but I do handle most maintenance myself and have hands-on experience working on my truck. In addition to P0719, I also notice an intermittent P0446 code that appears only after rain—this may be related to moisture affecting the EVAP system or wiring connections. I’d appreciate any clear, step-by-step guidance from experienced owners or mechanics on how to properly identify and fix both codes. Thanks in advance for your help!

The brake switch is located on the brake pedal assembly. For P0446: this code typically indicates a malfunction in the EVAP vent valve circuit—specifically, a vent valve stuck closed. Check all wiring harnesses, connectors, and ensure there's no moisture ingress. Your fuel gauge may be inaccurate as well; have you noticed any discrepancies in readings?

P0719 is almost certainly caused by a faulty brake light switch on the 1996 Chevrolet S10 4.3L V6. The P0446 code, however, relates to an EVAP vent valve that is stuck closed—not the fuel level sensor. This distinction is important for accurate diagnosis and repair.

Thanks for the correction—yes, I made a mistake earlier by confusing P0446 with P0461 due to memory lapse. We don’t want to mislead Morph or lead anyone in the wrong direction. Always verify codes before assuming root causes.
