1996 Oldsmobile Achieva 2.4L Engine P0302 Misfire Diagnosis and Fix

Model: 96 Olds Achieva Fault Code: P0302 Posted: 2009-06-11 21:05

I drove my 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva 2.4L to the store for about 3 miles, during which the car ran smoothly. After parking for approximately 30 minutes in rainy weather, I restarted the vehicle and immediately noticed it running roughly. The check engine light is now flashing while driving. A scan tool confirms a P0302 code — indicating a misfire in cylinder 2. The car had been wet throughout the day, but earlier today it ran fine for my wife during her commute to and from work. I'm looking for any insights or troubleshooting tips on this issue. Thanks, Dave.

What was the last time a maintenance tune-up was performed? Could a spark plug or ignition component be worn?

The last tune-up was done around 15,000 miles ago. The engine ran smoothly when turned off, but started running rough immediately after restarting about 30 minutes later.

Hi again — I’ve resolved the issue on my own. A friend of mine experienced the same P0302 problem with his 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva 2.4L a few years ago and hasn’t had any further issues since. Though it sounds unusual, simply loosening the fuel line at the fuel rail to relieve pressure restored smooth operation. I tried this and now the car runs normally again. This tip might help others facing similar problems. I laughed when my friend shared this — sometimes you can teach an old dog new tricks!
