P1441 Fault in 1996 Chrysler Grand Am 3.1L - EVAP System Flow During Non-Purge

Model: 96 GRAND AM 3.1 Fault Code: P1441 Posted: 2007-02-20 13:59

I'm experiencing a P1441 diagnostic trouble code on my 1996 Chrysler Grand Am with a 3.1L engine, specifically during the non-purge phase of the EVAP system. According to my repair manual, if air can be blown through the purge tube but not sucked through it, this indicates a faulty diaphragm in the EVAP canister. I've inspected all components and found no issues elsewhere. The only thing that stands out is that when testing the purge tube, I was able to suck air through it but could not blow air through it—this matches the symptom described in the manual. My vehicle had been sitting for a long time before I acquired it, which may have contributed to component degradation. Any insights or additional troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Could there be another solenoid or valve in the EVAP circuit besides the canister itself?

The system only includes the canister solenoid and one purge line solenoid. I compared the existing canister to a known-good unit, and while I could suck air through the purge tube on the old one, I couldn't blow air through it—this strongly suggests a failed diaphragm in the canister. My vehicle had been sitting for years before I purchased it, which may have accelerated wear.

The issue is most likely with the EVAP canister itself.
