1995 Nissan Altima P1320 Ignition Issue: Diagnosis and Solutions

Model: 95 nissan altima Fault Code: P1320 Posted: 2007-09-17 17:11

I'm having trouble with my 1995 Nissan Altima (160,000 miles) that has been exhibiting ignition-related issues. After troubleshooting multiple fault codes, I replaced the knock sensor, EGR solenoid, and distributor—specifically because an oil leak on the optical sensor was suspected as the root cause of the P1320 code, which disappeared after replacement. I also installed new spark plugs and wires. Even though no diagnostic codes are currently present, the vehicle exhibits poor acceleration: when idling in park and gently pressing the accelerator, it redlines; if pressed harder, it stalls. This behavior worsens during driving. The timing is set at 20 degrees, and I've tested the MAF sensor according to manufacturer guidelines. Fuel pressure is within normal range, so I suspect the fuel regulator may be involved. I'm currently trying to trigger another fault code for further diagnosis, but none have appeared yet. Occasionally, the timing light flickers unpredictably (flashing for a few ticks), making it difficult to see the timing marks. My current hypotheses are: 1. The ignition coil: I tested the primary resistance and found it acceptable, but the secondary resistance reads 15k ohms on the 200k ohm scale—should be between 10–12k ohms. 2. Throttle Position Sensor (TPS): While the manual lists this as a possible cause, no code is being triggered. 3. Excessive play in the timing chain. 4. Contaminated fuel. Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm open to questions and can provide more details if needed. Thanks, Perry.

In older Nissan Altima models, the power coil transistor built into the distributor can fail—often due to internal chip damage or degraded capacitors. Check the distributor harness and wiring connections for any signs of corrosion or physical damage. A faulty transistor may cause erratic ignition signals, leading to P1320 or intermittent stalling.
