P1406 Fault in 1995 Blazer 4.3L Engine: EGR Valve Carbon Buildup and Noise Solutions

Model: 95 Blazer 4.3 Fault Code: P1406 Posted: 2006-06-15 19:13

I'm experiencing a recurring issue with my 1995 Blazer 4.3L engine, specifically fault code P1406 related to the EGR valve. I've noticed small pieces of carbon accumulating inside the EGR valve, even though the valve itself is relatively new and appears to function properly. When I remove the valve and clean it manually, some carbon flakes come loose from within the intake manifold. I can also observe a visible buildup in the intake area. My main questions are: Is there any way to clean the EGR valve without removing the intake manifold? Additionally, when the EGR valve becomes clogged with carbon, the engine occasionally skips and the catalytic converter produces an unusual noise—does this behavior represent normal operation? Thanks for your help, Kenny.

I've heard that certain GM vehicles have a software update available for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) that cycles the EGR valve after engine shutdown to prevent carbon buildup. You may want to contact your local dealer to check if this update is available for your 1995 Blazer. Another solution: installing a screen filter directly in front of the EGR valve can help trap carbon deposits and reduce accumulation over time.

This issue has been observed before. GM offers an EGR gasket with an embedded screen that significantly reduces carbon buildup inside the valve assembly. This modification is highly effective. Additionally, a foul exhaust odor may indicate a fuel leak near the intake manifold, particularly at the fuel injector cluster. Such leaks can lead to excessive carbon accumulation due to unburned fuel entering the intake system.
