My 2015 Ford Mustang GT is exhibiting rough acceleration and jerking during drive, accompanied by persistent P0012 and P0022 diagnostic trouble codes. When I temporarily unplug the intake camshaft position sensors, the engine runs smoothly. This suggests a potential issue with sensor signal detection or camshaft timing control. However, after replacing both intake camshaft position sensors for Bank 1 and Bank 2, the symptoms and fault codes persist. The behavior indicates that the problem may not be rooted in the sensors themselves but rather in the variable valve timing (VVT) system, particularly the VVT solenoid or its associated wiring.

I unplugged both intake camshaft position sensors located at the back of each cylinder head. When connected, the engine runs poorly; when disconnected, it runs perfectly. This strongly points to a signal issue rather than mechanical failure.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) may default to a cam timing mode when no valid camshaft signals are detected—such as when sensors are unplugged. As a test, replacing a suspect sensor with a known good one could help isolate the issue.
