P0014 Diagnostic Issue - 2014 GMC Terrain: Causes, Fixes & Cost Estimate

Model: 2014 GMC Terrain Fault Code: P0014 Posted: 2019-12-10 20:35

I own a 2014 GMC Terrain. About two weeks ago, the check engine light activated and the P0014 diagnostic trouble code appeared. I checked my oil level and found it to be low—so I topped it off and changed the oil with full synthetic lubricant. However, the check engine light returned shortly after. After researching, I learned that the P0014 code may stem from issues such as faulty solenoids or wiring problems in the variable valve timing (VVT) system. I replaced the timing valve control solenoid, and for about one day, the light remained off. It then reappeared with the same P0014 code. No noticeable drivability issues have been observed during this time. After a few days, the check engine light turned off on its own and stayed off for nearly a week before returning today. What could be causing this recurring issue? And what should I expect in terms of repair costs?

The P0014 code is commonly linked to intermittent wiring faults or malfunctioning VVT phaser components. A thorough diagnostic session—around one hour—by a technician experienced with this specific issue should help identify the root cause. Possible causes include incorrect camshaft timing, damaged harness wiring in the intake timing control valve solenoid system, continuous oil flow to the VCT piston chamber, or a failed solenoid that is stuck open. For reliable diagnosis and repair, it's recommended to use an OBD2 scanner with live data monitoring to confirm whether the issue is intermittent or persistent. Read more: p0014
