2013 Nissan Altima 2.5L P0014 Code: Exhaust Cam Position Timing Over-Advanced Bank 1 - Diagnosis & Solutions

Model: 2013 Altima 2.5 Fault Code: P0014 Posted: 2018-12-30 12:10

I've been consistently receiving a P0014 diagnostic trouble code on my 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5L, indicating an 'Exhaust Cam Position Timing - Over Advanced Bank 1' issue. I have already replaced the camshaft position sensor and tested all three variable valve timing (VVT) solenoids — both exhaust and intake — which all show proper function when powered directly from the battery. I also performed a full oil and filter change using Mobile 1 0W-20 synthetic oil. Despite these steps, the P0014 code persists. What other potential causes should I consider? I'm new to diagnosing engine issues and would appreciate any expert guidance on next steps.

Could you clarify how you tested the exhaust valve solenoid for proper function? What method did you use to verify opening and closing behavior?

I removed each VVT solenoid and connected a wire directly from the battery terminals. When activated, all three solenoids demonstrated clear opening and closing cycles — indicating they are functioning correctly. I also cleaned them with brake cleaner to ensure no debris was interfering. Based on this test, I believe the solenoids themselves are not faulty. Thanks for the insight.

Ok, if you activate the solenoid in place engine running at idle does it cause engine to stumble? If so then the solenoid is activating the camshaft phaser and suspect problem in solenoid circuit or PCM If not then suspect problem with phaser. Another test of the of the solenoid would be to swap the exhaust solenoid with the input solenoid to see if problem follows.
