2012 Volkswagen Passat P0106 Error and Wrench Symbol Appearing on Dashboard

Model: 2012 Passat Fault Code: P0106 Posted: 2017-01-14 20:24

I own a 2012 Volkswagen Passat. Whenever I drive on the interstate for more than a few miles, a wrench symbol appears in the instrument cluster, typically covering the gear indicator (such as D or R). The shifting becomes noticeably harder, especially in lower gears. This symptom disappears immediately when I turn off the engine. If I continue driving while the wrench symbol is present, the check engine light eventually activates with fault code P010

I'm not seeing this as a diesel issue—thank you for clarifying. The wrench symbol appears in the center of the digital trip and odometer display, often associated with service reminders like oil changes. However, since it's covering the gear indicator and not showing a liquid-filled amber bottle, it's likely related to vehicle diagnostics rather than maintenance alerts. I recommend visiting an authorized VW dealer to investigate potential emissions or sensor issues.

Thanks for the clarification—I didn't realize that the wrench symbol was tied to oil change reminders. In my case, it appears at the top of the instrument panel and completely covers the gear indicator (D, R, etc.), which makes driving less intuitive. This behavior is consistent with what I'm experiencing.

Hi, I've been experiencing exactly the same symptoms. Has anyone found a resolution or identified a known cause for this issue on the 2012 Passat? Any advice on whether P0106 and the wrench symbol are related?
