2012 Chevy Cruze Loss of Power with DTC P2138 - Can It Be Driven Safely?

Model: 2012 Chevy Cruze Fault Code: P2138 Posted: 2018-02-26 22:05

I own a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze 1.8L automatic and am experiencing a loss of engine power. The vehicle displays Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P2138: 'Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor Signal 1–2 Not Plausible'. The car can currently be driven on back roads at low speeds, but I'm concerned about how long we can safely continue using it. My son needs the vehicle for work due to a passenger door repair after an accident, and he has been using mine for his daily commute (6 miles round trip). I want to fix the issue but don't know if prolonged use will cause further damage. I'm seeking advice on whether driving with this fault is safe, and what steps I should take to diagnose or resolve the problem. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

There are no other diagnostic codes present. DTC P2130 indicates that one of the two accelerator pedal position (APP) sensors is not returning an expected signal. This could be due to issues with the gas pedal assembly — such as damaged wiring, corrosion, or loose connections. I recommend clearing the code and monitoring whether it returns after driving under normal conditions. Some parts stores offer free diagnostic scans and can help clear the code for a follow-up check. In some cases, rough driving or prolonged exposure to mud and snow may cause sensor drift or damage. If the issue persists, inspect the pedal assembly and wiring harness for signs of wear or corrosion. The Engine Control Module (ECM) will then command the throttle actuator to operate in reduced power mode as a safety measure.
