2011 Chevrolet Malibu P0014 and P0420 Codes: Camshaft Solenoid Replacement & Diesel-Like Noise Diagnosis

Model: 2011 Malibu Fault Code: P0014 Posted: 2017-05-13 18:59

My 2011 Chevrolet Malibu is displaying diagnostic trouble codes P0014 and P0420. The engine makes a ticking noise at idle and sounds similar to a diesel during acceleration. Auto Zone's scanner indicates that the most likely fix is replacing the camshaft position adjuster solenoid. I'm wondering if this is sufficient or if I should visit a dealership for a more comprehensive diagnosis. Any insights from owners with similar issues? Thanks.

My vehicle has passed the powertrain warranty at 104,116 miles and is now outside manufacturer coverage.

Independent repair shops are fully capable of diagnosing and fixing this type of issue without needing a dealership visit.

Replaced the camshaft adjuster solenoid and solved that problem, now I hear an occasional rattle knocking sound at certain rpms. Any thoughts?

Just to confirm — did the P0014 and P0420 codes disappear after replacing the camshaft solenoid? Also, was the knocking or rattle noticeable before or after the replacement? I don't have any current issues, but wanted to check for common patterns.

Yes, I replaced both intake and exhaust components during the repair. I found metal shavings on the intake valve screen. After a fresh oil change today, my wife reported no knocking sound. I'll perform another oil change in a few weeks to ensure all debris has been removed. Thanks for your input.

I experienced the same issue with my 2013 Equinox last year. Initially, I couldn't identify the source of metal shavings. It turned out to be a failing timing chain — after replacing it, the shavings stopped and symptoms resolved completely.
