2011 Jeep Liberty Jet P0420 Fault: Catalytic Converter Issue and DIY Troubleshooting Guide

Model: 2011 Jeep Liberty Jet Fault Code: P0420 Posted: 2014-10-10 18:48

I recently drove my 2011 Jeep Liberty Jet approximately 20 miles after filling up at a Shell gas station. During the trip, the check engine light activated. I first checked the fuel cap, then visited Advanced Auto to get carb cleaner and had them scan for trouble codes — which revealed P0420. I returned to my location in SC with the warning light still on. After arriving home, I cleared the code. I subsequently performed a series of checks: inspected for leaks or damaged wiring, cleaned the intake tube and lightly cleaned the EGR valve, replaced the fuel cap, and added two bottles of injector cleaner directly into the gas tank. Each time I cleared the P0420 code, it returned after just 2 to 4 starts. I'm now seeking advice on what else to try before taking the vehicle to a dealer. Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated — especially regarding potential causes and cost-effective fixes for this common issue in 2011 Jeep Liberty models?

Make sure your caps lock is turned off when posting — it can appear as shouting in forums. The P0420 code typically indicates a catalytic converter issue. Before visiting the dealer, confirm that your Jeep Liberty Jet is stock (as originally delivered) — this distinction matters significantly. For 2011 models, the catalytic converter is generally covered under warranty for up to 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you're still experiencing recurring P0420 codes after troubleshooting, it may point toward a genuine converter failure or underlying engine performance issues.
