2011 Toyota Equinox 122,000 miles with P0013 OBD2 Code - Timing Chain Replacement Needed?

Model: 2011 Equinox Fault Code: P0013 Posted: 2018-01-19 10:07

I've recently received a P0013 diagnostic code on my 2011 Toyota Equinox with 122,000 miles. The dealership has already replaced the camshaft solenoid, crankshaft position sensor, and spark plugs, but the check engine light remains illuminated. They now claim that the timing chain must be replaced to resolve the issue. As someone who has owned numerous vehicles over the past 60 years, I have never had to replace a timing chain in any of them—so is this truly necessary? What are other common causes or solutions for P0013 on this model?

This issue may be related to a circuit fault, as noted in the official OBD2 code reference: https://www.obd-codes.com/p0013. The P0013 code specifically indicates a problem with the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) or camshaft position sensor circuit. Before replacing expensive components like the timing chain, it's important to verify whether the fault is actually related to wiring, sensors, or electrical connections. A proper diagnostic scan should confirm if there's an open circuit or intermittent signal.
