2011 Chevrolet Cruze P0496 Code: Causes, Location, and Fix Guide

Model: 2011 chevrolet cruze Fault Code: P0496 Posted: 2013-12-28 15:08

I own a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze and am experiencing DTC P0496 — Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Flow During Non-Purge. The common suggestion is to replace the EVAP purge solenoid valve, but I want to confirm its location and whether this fix resolves the issue. DTC P0496 Explanation: The engine control module (ECM) monitors for continuous intake manifold vacuum flow to the EVAP system. When the ECM commands both the EVAP canister purge and vent solenoid valves closed, it checks if a vacuum is being drawn on the EVAP system via the fuel tank pressure sensor. If vacuum exceeds a set threshold within a specific time frame, the code P0496 is triggered. Conditions for Setting the Code: - The fuel tank pressure sensor detects vacuum during non-purge conditions. - The test runs when the engine starts and meets required conditions. - Intermittent faults may stem from damaged or improperly installed components, including the purge solenoid valve. Where is the purge solenoid located? The EVAP purge solenoid is typically mounted on the top of the engine, near the rear. It connects to two hoses and has one electrical connector — replacement is generally straightforward. Important Note: While replacing the purge solenoid may resolve the issue in some cases, P0496 can also be caused by other components such as the EVAP vent solenoid, fuel tank pressure sensor, or faulty hoses. Simply replacing the solenoid without diagnosing the full system may not fully fix the problem. What should I do next? If you don’t have diagnostic tools, it’s recommended to take your vehicle to a professional shop for testing. Otherwise, start by checking and replacing components systematically — beginning with the purge solenoid, then moving to the vent solenoid or pressure sensor if needed.

Is this code commonly caused by a faulty EVAP purge solenoid? I’ve seen many forums suggest replacing it, but I’m concerned about whether that’s the root cause.

I have over 100,000 miles on my 2011 Cruze and recently started seeing P0496. Could age or mileage be contributing to this issue?

The solution isn’t always a simple part replacement. DTC P0496 can result from multiple EVAP system components — including the purge solenoid, vent solenoid, fuel tank pressure sensor, or hoses. Without proper diagnostics, replacing just one part may not resolve the issue. In my 2011 Chevrolet Cruze (out of warranty at 38,000 miles), I replaced the EVAP EMIS CNSTR PURGE SOL (ACDelco #214-2320) after being charged $250 by a dealer for the same part. After only 50 miles of driving, the P0496 code remains. Will clearing the code help? Or does it require further diagnosis? I’ve also noticed a drop in fuel efficiency — from 39 mpg to 31 mpg — and the gas gauge responds slowly at first, correcting after 5–10 minutes. This suggests possible EVAP or sensor issues. If the purge solenoid isn’t the root cause, what’s the next logical component to check? The EVAP EMIS CNSTR VNT SOL (ACDelco #214-2230) is a likely candidate.

Thanks for sharing — I didn’t expect such a mileage-related issue. What engine type do you have? (e.g., 2.4L or 2.5L)?

autojoe wrote: the solution to any problem is to test component or system.if you dont have necessary testing equipment then you take to a shop that does or you just start replacing parts.this code does not mean it is the evap purge solenoid that is defective.it very well may be bad but other components or things can cause this code. DTC P0496 evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Flow During Non-Purge Circuit/System Description This DTC tests for continuous intake manifold vacuum flow to the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. The engine control module (ECM) seals the EVAP system by commanding the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve Closed and the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve Closed. The ECM monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor to determine if a vacuum is being drawn on the EVAP system. If vacuum in the EVAP system is greater than a predetermined value within a predetermined time, this DTC sets. Conditions for Setting the DTC The fuel tank pressure sensor indicates vacuum during a non-purge condition. The EVAP system tests run when engine is first started and meets the Conditions for Running the DTC. An intermittent condition could be caused by an improperly installed or damaged EVAP canister purge solenoid valve. there is a purge solenoid/vent solenoid/pressure sensor in tank/charcoal canister/gas tank and interconnecting hoses plus electrical circuits for vent and purge solenoids. email me and i send send you replacement info.....i tried to add picture but would not let me.the purge solenoid sits on the top of engine towards back.not hard to replace.2 hoses and an electrical connector. I am getting the same code on my 2011 cruze. Also out of warranty(38,000mi). I replaced the $25 EVAP EMIS CNSTR PURGE SOL(ACDelco #214-2320) that my dealer wanted to charge me $250 to replace. I have only driven it 50 miles since I replaced it, but I still have the DTC, will I need to get the codes cleared or will it clear if the replacement part fixed the issue? Some other background info I am also getting bad gas mileage. I was at 39mpg now at 31mpg. After filling up the gas gauge is slow to respond and corrects itself after 5-10 minutes. If this was not the issue what is the next logical part to replace? SOLENOID,EVAP EMIS CNSTR VNT SOL (ACDelco #214-2230)
