2010 Impala ABS and Traction Control Light On with U0100 and C0040 Diagnostic Codes

Model: 2010 Impala Fault Code: C0040 Posted: 2015-02-16 17:50

I'm currently using a 2010 Chevrolet Impala as a loaner vehicle, which may eventually lead to a purchase. The car occasionally triggers the ABS/Service Traction Control warning light—typically when turning in my driveway or entering a side road, though it can also appear randomly while driving on regular roads. I initially suspected wire chafing, but the dealership mechanic believes it could be a failing wheel bearing. Another concern is an unusual noise coming from the ABS pump. On snowy roads, if I floor the accelerator, I hear a whirring sound similar to a windshield wiper motor—this occurs only when the traction control system is active. Once the vehicle begins moving and traction control disengages, the noise stops. The same noise happens during hard braking on snow-covered surfaces. All functions otherwise operate normally, but I'm concerned about the noise and potential safety implications. I took the car to an independent garage for a second opinion, where they diagnosed two codes: U0100 and C0040. The mechanic noted that the ABS control module (located near the driver's side firewall) appears to have been replaced at some point. They explained that U0100 may indicate a communication failure with an ECM or powertrain control unit, which could cost around $300 and requires dealer installation. C0040 points specifically to an issue with the right front wheel. I shared this information with the dealership mechanic, who dismissed the U0100 code as minor—suggesting it might simply result from a previous battery disconnection. I remain skeptical about this explanation, especially given the persistent noise and warning light behavior.
