2010 Ford Fusion P0456 Fault: Capless Fuel System & EVAP Leak Solution

Model: 2010 ford fusion Fault Code: P0456 Posted: 2014-02-23 19:55

Hello — I'm experiencing a P0456 diagnostic trouble code on my 2010 Ford Fusion at 68,000 miles. I was initially concerned about the absence of a traditional gas cap, as this model has a capless fuel system (Easy Fuel). I haven't taken it to the dealership for service yet. Has anyone else encountered this issue? What steps should I take to resolve it without incurring high repair costs? Ken

You mentioned no gas cap — is that accurate? If so, the P0456 code might be expected. But did you mean to say 'P0455' instead of 'P0456'? Clarifying this helps ensure correct diagnosis.

Kev2 — the 2010 Ford Fusion is equipped with a capless fuel system, not a traditional gas cap. This design was introduced as part of Ford's 'Easy Fuel' technology. For reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLdBEtaSaSk

A quick check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) reveals TSB 11-11-28, which applies to 2008–2010 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles with capless fuel systems. This bulletin covers EVAP system leaks detected via DTCs such as P0442, P0455, or P0456 — including the 'Check Fuel Fill' message in the dashboard. Specifically, TSB V21018 recommends checking for debris (like sand or dust) on the capless fuel door seal. Before replacing parts, perform five actuations of the capless sealing door using a supplemental refueling adapter (SRA) funnel or a standard unleaded fuel nozzle. Refer to your owner’s manual for SRA location. Additionally, brief bursts of shop air can be applied directly to the seal to clear debris. After clearing, re-run the evaporative leak test. If the leak persists and smoke is confirmed during testing, follow standard workshop procedures as outlined in the vehicle's service manual.

Thanks Kev2 — I'm relieved this isn't going to cost me a lot! I'll try the debris-clearing steps first before visiting the dealer. Appreciate your help, Ken.
