2010 Ford F-150 P0022 and P0012 Fault: Can Both VCT Solenoids Fail Simultaneously?

Model: 2010 F150 Fault Code: P0087 Posted: 2013-12-26 10:44

I connected a diagnostic tool to my 2010 Ford F-150 with a 5.4L engine and received fault codes P0022 and P0012. These codes relate to the Variable Cam Timing (VCT) solenoids. Can both VCT solenoids fail at the same time? Or are there other potential causes? I'm looking for clarity on possible root causes and recommended troubleshooting steps. Thanks in advance.

Are there any additional diagnostic codes present? Has there been any recent work performed on the vehicle? Check the oil level and condition — engine oil quality and quantity are critical for VVT operation. Inspect all wiring harnesses for damage, fraying, or loose connections. Specifically check fuse #32 in the central junction box.

No additional codes have been found, and no recent repairs or modifications were done to the vehicle. I'm now checking the items you suggested — thank you for the helpful advice!

The negative battery cable was extremely dirty; after cleaning it, the engine starts but only reaches a maximum speed of 80 mph. Additionally, the radio does not turn on when someone is seated in the passenger seat without wearing a seatbelt.

This behavior is standard across most vehicles — seat belt presence is required to enable certain systems like the radio. Could you clarify what 'it wants to run but at 80' means? Is your diagnostic tool retrieving all codes (including specific ones from P0001–P0999) or only generic OBD-II codes? Regarding the radio and seatbelt issue: Does your truck have a remote starter? Was the key left in your pocket during cable cleaning? Is the radio stock, with no aftermarket modifications? As mentioned by Mohawkmtrs — engine oil must be clean, at proper level, and sufficient. Oil pressure directly affects VVT performance and should not be overlooked.

The truck's dashboard displays a maximum speed limit of 80 mph.

I'm still unclear about the exact issue — could you please explain what is happening in simpler terms?

MY KEY Codes P0012 and P0022 indicate that both VCT solenoids are sticking. Yes, it's possible for both to fail simultaneously — they often do so in pairs. There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) recommending replacement of the solenoids followed by reprogramming of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). I strongly recommend taking the vehicle to a dealership for this repair. Regarding the 80 mph speed limit and radio issue: This is part of the My Key system, designed to prevent unauthorized use. The truck requires the master key to be present in order to disable the security system. If the key is not detected or is missing, the system will lock out certain functions — including turning off the radio — until a proper key signal is received at the dealership.
