2010 Dodge Ram 5.7L Hemi P0016, P1128, P0344 - Engine Light Returns After Restart, Shift Issues at 2200 RPM

Model: 2010 Dodge Ram Fault Code: P0016 Posted: 2018-12-10 15:14

I've been experiencing three recurring engine codes—P0016, P1128, and P0344—that only appear after restarting my 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi. The truck runs normally when the codes are cleared, but within 2-3 seconds of restarting, the check engine light comes back on. At around 2200 RPM, the transmission shifts oddly and fails to downshift when flooring the gas pedal. I've already replaced both the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, and oil levels are normal. The vehicle has no aftermarket modifications except for a rear suspension air lift. Any insights into what might be causing this intermittent issue? I suspect VCT (Variable Cam Timing) is involved given the engine type.

Which specific engine configuration? Does it have VCT (Variable Valve Control)? Is the truck stock with no aftermarket parts? Are there any additional codes present—scan results may reveal more. P0016 indicates crankshaft/camshaft timing misalignment, P0344 points to intermittent camshaft position sensor signal, and P1128 suggests closed-loop fueling not achieved on Bank 1. You used a scan tool to retrieve these codes, correct? The key-on-off method is insufficient—ideally, use a lab scope to monitor CMP/CKP signals while gently wiggling the harness to identify signal loss. Inspect the camshaft position sensor connection for tightness, cleanliness, and corrosion. Adding a bottle of Risolone oil detergent may help if VCT is active. Until we confirm engine details, further diagnostics are needed.

It's a 5.7L Hemi with VCT. Where exactly is the CMP (Cam Position) sensor harness located? I believe there may be one additional code that will appear shortly—once I perform a full scan. I have confirmed using a proper OBD2 scanner to retrieve these codes.

No aftermarket modifications beyond the rear suspension air lift. The truck is otherwise stock.
