2010 Chevrolet Cobalt P0013 and P2279 OBD2 Diagnostic Guide

Model: 2010 Chevy Cobalt Fault Code: P0013 Posted: 2014-08-23 16:39

I own a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt and recently the check engine light has activated, triggering both fault codes P0013 and P2271. I'm seeking expert advice on diagnosing and resolving these issues. The vehicle is stock, and I'd like to understand what steps to take for accurate troubleshooting without unnecessary repairs or costs.

For code P0013: Inspect the exhaust camshaft actuator connectors located at the top of the right-side (RS) engine, beneath the engine sight shield. The cam cover has 'INTAKE' and 'EXHAUST' markings to identify which connector corresponds to the exhaust actuator. Verify that the connector is securely fastened. Check for 12V power at the connector with a key-on engine-off (KOEO) test; ensure the signal wire is properly grounded—no short or open circuit. For code P2271: This indicates an issue with the post-catalytic converter oxygen sensor. Use an OBD2 scanner to monitor voltage readings—look for consistently rich conditions. Compare these values to pre-cat sensor data for better context. Note: The vehicle is stock, which simplifies diagnostics but still requires proper equipment and procedure. Thanks for the detailed guidance. I'm currently getting P0013. Since I don't have much mechanical experience, I'll need to have a professional inspect and repair the camshaft actuator. Is this typically an expensive fix?

The repair should not be overly costly—approximately 1 hour of labor (around $100) plus parts, which are about $30 each for two actuators. This does not include diagnostic time. For visual reference, see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Dkdd287AKg
