2010 Chevrolet Cruze 1.6L Petrol - P0016 Fault Code, Engine Noise, Loss of Power

Model: 2010 chevrolet cruze Fault Code: P0016 Posted: 2018-06-14 13:47

Hi there, I own a 2010 Chevrolet Cruze with a 1.6L petrol engine. The check engine light has been on recently, and the diagnostic tool detected fault code P0016. I initially replaced both the intake and exhaust camshaft position sensors, cleared the code, and drove for several hours. However, the engine light turned back on, and the new code displayed is P0016. This recurring issue is concerning. In addition to the persistent check engine light, I'm noticing a loud noise when starting the vehicle, and there's a noticeable loss of power during driving. Given these symptoms—especially the startup noise and performance drop—I suspect the timing chain may have jumped a tooth or two. The camshaft position sensor replacement didn't resolve the issue, which suggests a deeper mechanical problem. I'm looking for advice on how to properly diagnose and fix this P0016 error. Any insights into possible causes or recommended next steps would be greatly appreciated.

Given the startup noise and symptoms like loss of power, it's highly likely that the timing chain has jumped a tooth or two. I recommend removing the valve cover to visually inspect the chain and check for proper valve timing alignment. If the chain is misaligned, this condition could worsen over time—leading to severe engine damage if not addressed promptly. A jump in timing can cause P0016 (Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction) due to incorrect camshaft position detection.
