P0303 Misfire on 2009 Volkswagen Jetta: Spark Plug or Wiring Issue at 102,000 Miles?
My 2009 Volkswagen Jetta is showing a check engine light with fault code P0303, indicating a misfire on cylinder #3. I've already replaced the coil and spark plug for cylinder #3, but the P0303 code remains pending during diagnostics. Additionally, I'm seeing a P0300 (random misfires) and occasionally a P0305 (misfire on cylinder #5), which reset after inspection. The spark plug removed appears to be original—VW-stamped—and installed at 102,000 miles. I'm wondering whether I should replace all five spark plugs or if the issue might lie with the ignition wires. Could a timing belt failure also be contributing? Note: The 2.5L engine in this model uses a timing chain, not a timing belt, and there is no official replacement interval for it.
Fuel-related issues can also trigger P030x codes—check fuel pressure and look for partially clogged injectors. Vacuum leaks or mechanical problems should also be ruled out. > Consider using a bottle of 'Techron' or 'Seafoam' fuel system cleaner before replacing any parts to clear potential deposits. > Do you have access to an OBD2 scanner that can display live data (e.g., engine temperature, fuel trim, misfire counts)? PS: The 2009 Jetta 2.5L uses a timing chain, not a timing belt, and there is no recommended replacement interval for it.
