2009 Ford Escape P0022 Code: Engine Stuttering at 1500-2000 RPM - Solutions and TSB Updates

Model: 2009 Ford Escape Fault Code: P0022 Posted: 2016-09-29 17:28

I'm experiencing a loss of power when driving between 1500 and 2000 RPM. The engine stutters and has difficulty firing, but runs smoothly at idle. When I accelerate harder, it responds normally and drives fine. The check engine light is on, and the diagnostic code reading is P0022. This issue appears to be related to the variable valve timing (VCT) system. I've already performed an oil change and conducted a safety inspection, but the problem persists. I'm seeking advice on how to diagnose and fix this issue, especially given that Ford has issued technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to VCT solenoid performance.

Check the operation of the timing control valve solenoid. Possible causes include faulty wiring or a sticking valve. A high-quality engine oil treatment may help improve performance in some cases. Refer to this forum's troubleshooting section for detailed explanations and solutions related to P0022 codes.

I found TSB 10-19-1, which recommends replacing both VCT solenoids as a corrective action. This may resolve the issue if the fault is due to solenoid failure or malfunction.

I've been informed that TSB 11-12-5 supersedes TSB 10-19-1. Currently, I'm considering a full engine diagnostic costing around $800 to confirm the root cause. Is there any more cost-effective solution available? I'm also trying to assess whether Ford's technical support is reliable in addressing this issue. The car runs fine under normal conditions. After an oil change on Friday, the check engine light appeared on Saturday. On Wednesday, I received P0012 and P0022 codes. Any additional advice from the community would be greatly appreciated.

The check engine light came back after an oil change—ensure that the oil level is correct and using the recommended type. For a do-it-yourself approach, try applying an engine oil treatment to potentially free up stuck VCT components. Additionally, perform an electrical inspection of the solenoid, wiring, and connectors for any signs of failure.
